January 2018: Hair Favorites

Hey friends! Welcome to 2018... Can you believe we are getting close to the first month being over?! I feel like we were just popping the bubbly for the midnight countdown! One of my projects for 2018 (not resolutions, projects... they seem to have more of a beginning and end when being referred to as projects, while the word "resolution" seems like more of a forever word to me. It's a little too daunting, too much pressure. Projects are done on YOUR schedule at YOUR time.) was to commit to a favorites post at the end of every month covering hair, makeup, skincare and fashion. When it comes to hair products, I'm obsessed.... but seriously picky. As part of my expanding career and branding, I am sent multiple hair products, tools, treatments. etc. every single day. The more products I use, the pickier I become. I think that stems from being exposed to so many GREAT products that the basics just seem soooo.... well, basic. Before I started this career of mine, I had used what I THOUGHT were tons of different items. In hindsight, I hadn't even scratched the surface. With a growing number of product trials, I started realizing that I simply just didn't know what hair products could truly do. I accepted that all hair sprays were either stiff and drying or too heavy of a spray, all dry shampoos felt disgusting, and all conditioners were created equal.... BOY, WAS I WRONG! Saying all of this to say, don't cheat yourself out of great hair by shying away from products. Products are KEY to the prep in achieving every desired cut and style. (SIDE NOTE: How freaking adorable is Zoey Deschanel, yall!? UGH!)

With the arrival of 2018, I decided to start a monthly series on my favorite hair, makeup and skincare products/tools and the looks you can create using these goodies! As if you couldn't tell by the title, January's first favorite feature (holy smokies... say that 10 times fast. Whew!) is all about HAIR! If you're a regular reader, you know that I STRIVE to find new, fresh content that you've haven't seen 9238422 times, so I've gathered a list of some of my brand new favorites - none of which have EVER been covered in the jb.beautyreport. Hopefully some of these are new to you or you've at least been curious about these products or hair care companies.

>>> Don't forget! Take a selfie with YOUR favorite hair product/tool (bonus points for a JBBS purchase and/or something featured on the jb.beautyreport!) and tag Jill Brooks Beauty for FREE goodies, a feature on the JBB socials and a discount code for the online beauty boutique, The Jill Brooks Beauty Shoppe!

First up, IGK Sunday Funday Texture Foam. (Purchase here: Jill Brooks Beauty Shoppe, $28) The first thing I really noticed about this texturizing mousse was how much bang I got for my buck. It only takes a tiny little dollop of product - which is great, because the foaming cap only dispenses a small amount at a time. I SO appreciate this, because I'm forever wasting product from over-zealous packaging. This glorious product has several uses and benefits other than the obvious - This product is p.e.r.f.e.c.t. for creating texture, volume and adding a little bit of hold and some muscle!

For sky-high volume that will last all day and night, rub a small amount between your palms until emulsified. Focusing on Zone 1, which is the area from your scalp to about 1-2" down the hair shaft, rub the product and gently massage into the hair. (ProTip: Apply product to the back of your head and crown first. Most of us have the initial instinct to start in the areas that we see first, such as our hairline, the part. etc. In order to prevent over-application that can lead to oiliness, start at the bottom and work your way up. We need to apply the least amount of product in the front and if you accidentally dispense a little too much, it won't be as noticeable on the nape in the back as it would be if we started at the front in the bang or fringe area.) No matter whether you're an old pro or a first-timer, Sunday Funday is a MUST for blowouts or volumized styling. Remember that muscle and hold we talked about earlier? It's a crucial part of a successful and long lasting blowdry style. SF gives hair that much needed muscle memory to keep those disulfide bonds set and strong no matter what the elements throw your way. Plus LOOK AT THAT PACKAGING! IT'S SO CUTE!!

Next up is It's a 10 Miracle Defrizzing Gel - This product is a one-stop-shop for all things smoothing! With the gel-like formula, this gel is super light weight and won't weight down your tresses. It's great for all types of curl patterns from straight to kinky curls. It's perfect for combating frizziness and has a built-in anti-humectant helping to prevent humidity wreaking havoc on your style. I especially love this product for my curly-haired clients because it's not stiff and crunchy, yet still helps define and polish those curls. This product can also be used prior to blowdrying your hair out straight for shiny, frizz-free volume. I'm a sucker for most products by It's a 10, because they jam pack so many benefits into ONE product. It's great for travel or to toss in your gym bag - After your workout, rinse your hair (shampoo/condition, if needed) and towel dry. Start with a dime-sized amount and emulsify between hands. Apply evenly throughout hair - concentrating on mid-shaft and ends - and comb through to ensure consistency. Short on time? Scrunch hair to tighten up the curl pattern and let air dry or use a diffuser to speed up the process a bit. NOTE: When used incorrectly, a diffuser can actually inhibit curls. Make sure you're on low speed, medium heat and diffuse from the bottom, allowing the curls to "pool" on top of the diffuser attachment. This will maximize your curl potential while minimizing chances for frizziness. There are a ton of YouTube videos about diffusing your hair. I attached my favorite below showing techniques that can be used for short to long hair. (It's a 10 Defrizzing Gel available here: The Jill Brooks Beauty Shoppe, $17.50, Diffuser hairdryer attachment available February 1st at The JBBS, $19)

(PRO-TIP: Use sea salt spray for added texture, grit and all-day beach waves. My favorite is Verb Sea Spray + Verb Sea Texture Cream and both available in the Jill Brooks Beauty Shoppe, $15 each)

Next on the list is drybar Triple Sec 3-in-1 (and my personal favorite from this month!) - As you could already tell, there are three different kinds of product in just one can! This dry airy spray adds texture, amplifies volume, and refreshes day (or two!) -old hair. This spray is perfect for all hair types. It extends the life of your blowout, adding texture, volume and that perfectly tousled, undone look. It feels like a lighter version of a dry shampoo and though it can do the job of one, it's much more than just a dry shampoo. I'm SO weird when it comes to scents, and l really love the light, powdery scent too! It's 🎵so fresh and so clean, clean🎵 without being overbearing. Instantly hooked from the first spray! Lightly spritz at the root area and let the product sit for 5-10 minutes before brushing through your hair. This will allow the product time to fully soak up any excess oils from your scalp area. You can use a few small sprays of Triple Sec throughout the mid-lengths and ends of your hair to help create that lived-in, perfect girl-next-door hair! I've attached a few photos below to show you guys what this triple threat can do! (Sephora, $23)
