#FitLife Makeup Tips + Tricks

So after reading that headline, I'm sure some of you are thinking, "WTF? Gym and makeup DO NOT mix. WHO wears makeup to the gym?" If you're one of those people, go right on ahead and skip to the next blog post. I've heard every reaction under the sun when it comes to us females making the decision to wear makeup to the gym. I get it, but this post is one for those of us who like a little manual airbrush fix while we get our sweat on! For the rest of you, there will eventually come a time where you have to choose between staying cute & skipping the gym OR getting in a gym sesh & looking like the hot mess express. Maybe you have to go to the gym between jobs or between work and a night out on the town. Maybe you're like me and unless you're headed to the hospital, you're just not going to leave the house wearing ZERO makeup. Either way, it's almost always tricky for us women to look and feel presentable after a good workout. (This is just one more thing to add to the already long list of reasons why being a man is soooooo easy.... ;)) So... what if you didn't have to choose? What if your makeup stayed where you wanted it no matter how many reps you did? Look no further... I've compiled a list of a few little tips, tricks and some of my favorite stay-all-day products that will last through even the sweatiest workouts! First things first, you need an arsenal of waterproof makeup. Waterproof makeup isn't my favorite for every day wear, but it is perfect for those of us who can be a little hard on our face paint. This starts with FOUNDATION! You need something that is not only waterPROOF, but water resistant too. Some of the cult classics (and my personal faves!) are MAC Pro Long Wear Foundation (Macy's, $35)

and Estee Lauder's Double Wear Collection -- the traditional Double Wear foundation and Double Wear Light are the heavy hitters for this challenge (Macy's, $42).

Next up, BROWS! Even with the constantly growing brow obsession, there are still limited products that will go on easily and STAY on. There's always the option of permanent or semi-permanent makeup, but those come with downtime, a hefty price tag, and the risk that you'll either hate them or will get a botched job. If you decide to go the semi- or permanent route, do your research. I'd love to refer you to a brow specialist in your area! Just hit the contact tab and give me your info including your location, budget, and desired end results. If you're a regular reader, you know how much I love my Anastasia Beverly Hills DipBrow Pomade (Sephora, $18)....

most of that comes from the fact that it goes on and STAYS on! It's a water-resistant wax based pomade and will give you perfect brows that last all day. Just remember - dab & pat that sweat off your brow... NOTHING you can buy for daily use will last through heavy-handed rubbing or wiping with salty sweat.
So, we’ve got our foundation and brows under control, but LIPSTICK is that one thing that can help take your makeup game from amateur to full-on pro in one quick step. When you get your lips on, you look fresh, professional and polished. Something about a good lip will always brighten your face and makes me look like I'm so much more put together... even when I don't feel like it. Everyone has their favorite long-wearing lippies, but when it comes to a comfortable (!!) all-day lip, the only way to go is Stila's Stay All Day Lipstick (Sephora, $22).

It's a 12+ hour waterproof formula, so you'll have no worries about smearing or bleeding once it's set, plus the color range is pretty awesome so there's a little something for everyone. To finish off your look, give your face a quick spritz of setting spray. This will help everything from lipstick to eyeliner and foundation to blush last even longer. There are several setting sprays on the market and finding the best one for you is typically a trial-and-error kind of process. Two of my personal favorites include Elf Makeup Mist & Set (Walmart, $6)

or SmashBox Photo Finish Primer Water (Sephora, $32).

The Smashbox is TOTALLY worth the extra money if you have it, but if not, don't sweat it - da dum chh! - the Elf formula is still a really great product! So... you have some favorite products that you can't live without, BUT you still want to cash-in on some of these perks? Well.. here you go. I'll admit it's not *quite* as good as actual waterproof products, but DEFINITELY works wonders!! Take a small container and fill it with a few drops of setting spray (or Elf Makeup Lock & Seal, Walmart, $3). Using a brush, apply the setting spray on top of any products that aren't waterproof. Let dry and voila! DIY Waterproof Makeup.

Pro-Tip: I use a cheap contact lens case for my small container so I have a lid and don't waste any setting spray between uses. Make sure you rinse the container out often so that it stays sanitary! DON'T FORGET THE MAKEUP REMOVER!! Because of the nature of waterproof makeup, it's meant to stay put. This means its much tougher to remove than traditional foundations. You MUST use a makeup remover and/or cold cream to remove the makeup BEFORE cleansing your face. Estee Lauder Take It Off Makeup Remover Lotion (Belk, $30).

Don't skip this step - your makeup will NOT come off completely with cleanser only, leading to clogged pores, breakouts and irritation. It's safe to use and when used (and removed) properly, waterproof makeup can be a heaven-sent and no more harsh on your skin than traditional longwearing foundations. In a pinch, you can use makeup remover wipes. Make sure it's not a wet cleansing wipe -- It needs to be an actual makeup removing wipe. I like Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes (Target, $9.99/2pk).

Hope you learned a few things on the post today! Thanks for reading. It's you guys that make this blog thing happen! It doesn't matter what I write if no one listens. THANK YOU for listening. I love you guys. xo- jb
