My New Favorite Skin Secret

My latest skin secret is facial oil. I know, I know.... you have oily skin? You're afraid of feeling greasy? These were my same thoughts.... I just knew I would hate it, but was thinking I would take one for the team and give it a shot for you guys. Fast forward to two weeks later........ I'm enjoying the best skin of my life. My once combination skin has gone from oily to oil-balanced. The dry areas are nourished. It's soft, supple and even. I credit that 100% to a combination of soothe toner (Available at Elia in Columbia, TN - $14 for 1.7oz) for irritated/sensitive skin and Skin Sciences Vitamin E Face Serum (link coming soon).
My regimen includes several products, but I'll break down how I use the facial oil in my daily routine and how you might add it to yours!
After cleansing and using a masque (read about my favorites in the previous blog post), I spritz the soothe toner all over and let it soak in for 1-2 minutes. This is the time to use any serums, anti-wrinkle or acne treatments. (I use Clean and Clear's Persa-Gel 10 - my favorite topical cream for fighting acne).

After the treatment product(s) have the opportunity to be absorbed, I apply 4-5 drops of facial oil. If I feel like I still need a little extra moisture - especially this winter - I'll layer on a moisturizer. I try to ONLY layer at night, because that's when our skin is repairing itself and needs the most moisture to do its job. Using both is a little too heavy for me under makeup. (During the day, I go straight from facial oil to foundation or tinted moisturizer.) Then add your sunscreen and you're ready to begin your makeup routine.
Trying to find an addition to your skincare routine? Here are some options in all price ranges. As always, check with your dermatologist or medical provider before making any changes to your regimen. Remember, our skin is our largest organ. Topical creams are absorbed into the skin and bloodstream, so it's important that we know exactly what is in the products we are using and how they can affect our overall health.

Oily skin calls for a drier oil (jojoba or sesame), while dry skin or those using anti-aging products (glycolic serum or retinol), a heavier oil will feel perfect. Also, for those worried it'll cause acne or unpleasant side effects, Natural plant oils will NOT clog pores. Just make sure you stay away from mineral and synthetic oils.
be aware that facial and body oils can get expensive. Only a few drops will do to cover your whole face and neck, so they're definitely worth the investment and will last you forever!

La Mer The Renewal Oil Light texture and great for mixing with foundations. It's pricey at $130 for 15 mL, but La Mer is one of the most coveted skincare lines on the market. It's a multitasking, dual-phase oil that is great for dryness, fine lines and wrinkles, and loss of elasticity in the skin.

Goop by Juice Beauty Enriching Face Oil
The two most important ingredients in goop's natural face oil are vitamin e -- a powerful antioxidant with repairing properties -- as well as Poet's daffodil that will help eliminate any pigmentation issues (sun or age spots, which happen to be one of the biggest skin concerns for my clients). (goop.com, $110 for 30mL)

Josie Maran's Argan Oil This oil has been on the market for several years and is a cult favorite. If you're not familiar with her, Josie is a super model and obviously knows the importance of good skincare. I love that this formula comes in a light and regular version -- the light is perfect for summer and warmer, humid temps, while the regular is great for transitioning into cooler seasons. (Sephora, $48 FOR 1.7oz/50mL)

Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Fruit & Seed Oil Blend
A cult-favorite by tons of beauty bloggers, makeup artists and estheticians across the world. Great price point comparatively. Wears well under makeup or as a stand alone product. (PAISKINCARE.US, $40 FOR 30Ml)

Physician's Formula Argan wear ultra-nourishing argan oil This facial oil is a great dupe for Josie Maran's argan oil and comes with a smaller price tag for those wanting to save a little on their skincare routine. This formula is also available in a light version too. (Ulta, $14.98)
